Smartly Googled

Thursday November 11th 2004

Did you ever go to a website, looking for specific information, only to find that the site's organization and layout was just endlessly confusing? Would you like a way to find the information you were looking for, without ever having to even visit the site (until, of course, you've found what you've been looking for)? As long as Google has indexed the site in question, you're in fine, search-savvy shape. . .

Let's see this one play out with an example. Let's say I recall that somewhere deep within the archives of this site I posted an article about a trip up to Pennsylvania with Mike and Tish, where we did some great rock climbing inWissahickon. Yet it's late, I'm tired, and I can't remember where I filed in, nor do I care to take the time to troll through my site looking for it. So I go to Google. . .

In the search field, the first thing I put is Wissahickon. I could probably also put in PA or climb or something similar, but let's just see where this takes us. Now, how do I just search my site for this keyword? Add this to the search field:

site:jdwjr.com

What this does, as you might assume, is limit the search to only the site domain of "jdwjr.com". So, with my search criteria reading Wissahickon site:jdwjr.com, I fire away my query by hitting that luring "I'm Feeling Lucky" submit button. And voila, I'm instantly wisked to my site, and to my posting about Wissahickon PA Crags.

Brilliant!
